The Thunder Bolt
A few weeks ago, the hallways of Concordia Elementary transformed into a universe of stories. While the theme "Read Across the Universe" was sparked by fun and imagination, its true success lies in the lasting impact we see in our classrooms. By shifting the focus away from 'tasks' and toward the magic of a great story, we helped our students find a love for exploration that will stay with them long after they leave the classroom.

The primary goal of Book Week is to cultivate and celebrate our students’ reading stamina. In an era of endless digital content and short-form videos, we recognize that the ability to immerse oneself in a complex story is a vital exercise for the developing brain. By dedicating focused time to reading, we provided students with the opportunity to build this essential mental endurance, ensuring they have the tools to engage deeply with literature both now and in the future.
Stamina is more than just sitting still; it is the mental endurance to focus on a single task without distraction. This is a foundational "brain muscle" that carries over into every academic discipline, from deconstructing multi-step math problems to the careful attention required during hands-on science explorations. By choosing their own books, our students moved beyond just practicing a skill and began to truly own their journey as independent readers.

The excitement was infectious as Mystery Readers, including staff members from all across our school, slipped into classrooms to share their favorite stories throughout the week. These surprise visits were a highlight for our students, who loved the anticipation of wondering who might walk through the door next. Our guest readers brought stories to life in a way that reminded us all that reading is, above all else, a shared and joyful experience.
"I loved this year's theme because there really is a universe of ideas and experiences to be found in books. We can travel across that universe every time we read without leaving our home. One of the highlights for me was having so many parents join us for our 'PJs and Pages' event. Research shows that children who share books with family members, and see their parents reading regularly, become more strongly motivated to become readers themselves." — Mrs. Judi Taylor

Student voices also took center stage as they shared their favorite stories with the school. Across all grade levels, students recorded book recommendations for their peers, which became a highlight of our Elementary School assembly. The entire community gathered to watch these personal favorites come to life on the big screen.
The week started to wrap up with our Costume Parade, where the 'Universe of Stories' truly came to life. It was a joy to see our students proudly marching across the stage, dressed as their favorite storybook characters and holding their beloved books. They took great pride in stepping into the spotlight to showcase their outfits and share a love for these stories with their peers.

Beyond the fun, these stories are unique tools for social and emotional growth. When a student gets "lost" in a book, they are practicing the art of empathy. By stepping into the shoes of a character, they learn to navigate challenges and emotions different from their own, building a kinder, more connected community.
Throughout the week, our community also came together for a highly successful Used Book Sale that was organized by our Parents Support Organization (PSO), which gave pre-loved stories a chance to find new homes with eager readers. These moments reminded us that when we come together to share the stories we love, we show our students that reading is a treasure to be passed on and celebrated by everyone.

While several weeks have passed since the official event concluded, the doors it opened for our young readers remain wide open. We continue to see the sparks ignited during that week following our students into their daily routines. Thank you to every family who joined us on this journey. The "Universe of Stories" is now yours to keep exploring.
