The Annual EARCOS Teachers’ Conference

The annual EARCOS Teachers’ Conference serves as a vital touchstone for educators across Asia, providing a platform for professional development and the exchange of best practices. This year’s gathering was particularly significant, drawing over 1,300 attendees from all divisions, including elementary, middle, and high school.

The structure of the event was designed for deep immersion, beginning with a specialized pre-conference day that allowed teachers to dive into niche topics. These sessions were not merely lectures but acted as laboratories for educational tools, providing participants with actionable items they could immediately implement in their classrooms.

Key areas of focus included:

  • Assessment and Standards-Based Grading: The focus on assessment resonated deeply, providing sophisticated insights that perfectly complemented our school’s established trajectory toward more transparent and accurate student reporting.
  • Neurodiverse Learners: Sessions emphasized the essential nature of creating successful, inclusive learning spaces that cater to the unique needs of every student.
  • The AI Frontier: Educators engaged in critical discussions regarding the impact of Artificial Intelligence on education. The consensus moved beyond simple awareness, highlighting the importance of both teachers and students actively using AI in the classroom.

Reflecting on the overall experience, our Director of Teaching and Learning noted that the importance of attending EARCOS lies in its ability to foster new skills alongside unique opportunities to connect with peers and exchange innovative ideas. These face-to-face interactions serve as a powerful catalyst for the inspiration and professional growth of every participant. Our 13 educators left not just with new skills and digital tools, but with fresh inspiration and perspectives to share with their classrooms and students.

Building on our strong presence at EARCOS, our Middle School Counselor, Mrs. Linda Bloemberg, delivered an impactful presentation that challenged the traditional boundaries between counseling and coaching. As a coach certified by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and Gallup Strengths, she provided a deep dive into how educators can foster student agency and self-advocacy. The core of her session centered on a vital shift in mindset: moving from adults "fixing" problems for students to students developing their own solutions through the power of empowering questions.

The presentation was particularly relevant for those working with students from fourth grade through middle school, where cognitive development allows for higher-level reflection. Mrs. Bloemberg shared a powerful example of a student who, through a series of coaching questions, was able to navigate their own path to completing assignments rather than simply being told what to do. This approach aligns with a growth mindset, teaching students to pause, reflect, and take ownership of their academic journey.

A highlight of the session was a live five-minute coaching demonstration that resulted in two concrete, actionable steps for the volunteer, proving how quickly this method drives real-world progress. Feedback from the audience, which included both teachers and fellow counselors, highlighted a significant takeaway: the realization that while counseling and coaching are distinct, they are equally valuable. Educators walked away understanding that any teacher can adopt a coaching role by simply knowing how to ask the right questions at the right time.

Attending EARCOS for the first time, fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Michelle Ngai found the experience to be a powerful blend of professional validation and practical innovation. A specialized workshop on book clubs confirmed the strength of her current practices while providing fresh strategies to deepen student engagement. Additionally, she gained immediate insights into using AI as a creative partner, already implementing NotebookLM to generate podcasts that serve as high-quality benchmarks for student speaking and listening skills. This balance of affirmation and new skill-building ensured her first conference experience translated directly into impactful classroom results.

The 2026 EARCOS Teachers’ Conference serves as a powerful catalyst for innovation within our school community, bridging global educational trends with practical applications like advanced AI integration and the continued evolution of our coaching models. Whether through the leadership of our presenting counselors or the fresh perspectives of first-time attendees, the insights gained have reinforced our commitment to academic excellence and student agency. As these strategies take root, the conference's influence will continue to unfold, empowering our students as they grow into independent, confident, and globally minded learners.
