Bella Ngo, a recent graduate of Concordia International School Hanoi, returned to her alma mater during the Christmas break, reflecting on her journey and experiences. Growing up in Hanoi, Bella began attending Concordia in the second semester of eighth grade after spending time in Canada at a boarding school. Her decision to return was motivated by a desire to be closer to her family and to prepare for her future studies in the United States. This transition allowed her to immerse herself in an American curriculum, which she felt was instrumental in her academic preparation for university.
Currently enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York City, Bella is majoring in Strategic Design and Management, with a focus on fashion business. She is set to graduate in 2027. Looking ahead, Bella plans to work for a few years after graduation before pursuing graduate studies. While she hopes to stay in the U.S. for work, she is also considering options in Europe for her advanced education, keeping her future plans open-ended.
Reflecting on her time at Concordia, Bella expressed gratitude for how the school's rigorous curriculum and supportive community prepared her for college life. She noted that the intensity of the academic environment helped her thrive in a new setting. Despite experiencing much of her high school years online due to COVID-19, she fondly remembers the sense of belonging that Concordia fostered, allowing her to grow personally and academically.
One of Bella's favorite aspects of college life is the newfound freedom it brings. Living in New York City has presented numerous learning opportunities, and she appreciates being able to make her own decisions and manage her time independently. The city's vibrant atmosphere keeps her engaged and constantly learning.
As part of her commitment to fostering community among alumni, Bella took on a leadership role in establishing the NYC chapter of Concordia's alumni group this semester. Inspired by Mr. Compton’s vision for a supportive network among Concordia graduates studying in New York, Bella eagerly volunteered to lead this initiative. Currently, the chapter has seven members, with plans for growth as it enters its early stages.
The group aims to organize events that strengthen connections among alumni, starting with a dinner each semester and plans for more informal gatherings like coffee meet-ups. Bella finds great reward in seeing fellow alumni share their experiences and offer advice, which helps her navigate her own path. Membership benefits include school-sponsored events, such as free dinners that allow alumni to reconnect with familiar faces and share updates about their lives. Bella believes that these connections are vital; they provide support and guidance as members navigate their careers and personal growth.
Looking forward, Bella aims to host more events for the NYC Concordia alumni chapter and increase participation among alumni. She encourages current Concordia students looking to study in New York City to embrace the busy environment with an open mind and proactive attitude. "It's essential to put yourself out there and actively engage with your surroundings. If you don’t take the initiative, you might miss out on valuable experiences." She encourages students to adopt an open mindset, reminding them that there is no harm in trying new things or stepping out of their comfort zones.
Bella also stresses the significance of focusing on personal growth rather than comparing oneself to peers. "Everyone has their own unique path," she explains. "It's crucial to concentrate on what you believe in and what feels right for you." She suggests that students immerse themselves in campus life by signing up for clubs and organizations, which can provide opportunities to make friends and build a supportive network. Additionally, reaching out to professors can enhance their academic experience and foster meaningful connections within the academic community.
For those unfamiliar with American culture, Bella emphasizes the diversity of the U.S., encouraging students to be themselves and reach out to others. "It’s easy to feel lost or intimidated," she notes, "but people are generally friendly and willing to help." She also notes that everyone is navigating their own journey, and with time, you will eventually find your group.
Bella Ngo's journey from Concordia International School Hanoi to Parsons School of Design in New York City exemplifies the transformative power of education and community. As she embraces her new life in a bustling metropolis, Bella remains deeply connected to her roots and the supportive network of Concordia alumni. Her commitment to fostering connections through the newly established NYC alumni chapter reflects her belief in the importance of community, especially in a city that can often feel overwhelming. Looking ahead, Bella's aspirations to grow both personally and professionally serve as an inspiration to current students navigating their own paths. By sharing her experiences and insights, she not only honors her past but also paves the way for future generations of Concordia graduates to thrive in their endeavors, reminding them that with courage and connection, they can achieve their dreams.
