The Thunder Bolt
Recently, our Middle School boys’ and girls’ competitive volleyball teams traveled to Ho Chi Minh City to take part in the annual ASAC Junior Volleyball Tournament, hosted by the Australian International School (AIS) from May 8 to 10. Over three days of intense competition, both teams battled hard against a strong lineup of opponents and ultimately finished in fourth place. The tournament featured a total of 10 teams, bringing together schools from across Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia, making for a challenging international event.

Over the course of three action-packed days, our boys’ and girls’ teams competed in a total of seven games during the tournament weekend. The Middle School girls’ team stood out on the second day, going undefeated with an impressive 5-0 record. While both teams were naturally disappointed to finish in fourth place, just shy of bringing home a medal, they reflected positively on their progress. Players from both squads expressed pride in how much they have grown since the start of the season and highlighted the valuable lessons learned throughout the weekend. The tournament challenged them to come together, support one another, and persevere through tough matches, ultimately strengthening their skills and team spirit.
"I am incredibly proud of these girls for their unwavering team effort throughout the tournament. Their enthusiasm on the court was truly inspiring- they constantly encouraged one another, lifting each other up in every game. Their determination to push through challenges and play with heart exemplifies the spirit of our team. This tournament showed not just their skills, but their character, and I couldn’t be more proud of what they accomplished together." - Coach Goodrich

“ASAC was really fun this year, and it was my first time attending. I enjoyed bonding with my teammates, we even made customized shirts for the tournament. The tough games taught me a lot about teamwork. I was proud to achieve my personal goal of receiving MVP, but I was even happier that our team went undefeated and showed so much progress compared to the beginning of the season. I can’t wait to compete in ASAC again during High School.” - Jihoo (MVP, G8)

Some of the standout moments from the tournament weekend came from the time spent off the court. Students had plenty of opportunities for team bonding, allowing them to connect with peers outside their usual circles and build stronger relationships within the group. Concordia athletes also made new friends from other schools, expanding their networks and fostering a sense of community beyond their own teams.
Throughout the tournament, it was inspiring to see our students enthusiastically cheering for other teams and receiving the same support in return. At several points, all the teams from Vietnam joined together in spirited chants of “Việt Nam!” This display of sportsmanship highlighted the pride students felt for their home country, whether they were locals or visitors, and truly showcased the unifying power of sports.

“I enjoyed making a lot of friends and spending time bonding with my teammates. Although we didn’t get the place we wanted, I could see how much we’ve grown since the beginning of the year, and I’m really proud of that. Being named MVP of the tournament was an honor, but what I appreciated even more was seeing the progress our team made together.” Gia Hung (MVP, G8)
With this year’s tournament taking place locally in Ho Chi Minh City, many parents had the special opportunity to watch their children compete in person. This was a significant change from last year, when the tournament was held in Jakarta and fewer families could attend. As a result, we enjoyed a much larger and more enthusiastic group of parent supporters cheering from the sidelines. Adding to the excitement, our very own eighth-grade teacher, Mr. Sul, served as a dedicated cheerleader, attending every boys’ and girls’ game, boosting team spirit throughout the event. The support from family and staff truly made this year’s tournament a special experience for everyone involved.

The ASAC Junior Volleyball Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City was far more than a test of athletic skill, it was a celebration of teamwork and international friendship. Both our boys’ and girls’ teams demonstrated remarkable growth and determination, learning valuable lessons on and off the court as they competed with schools from across Southeast Asia. The enthusiastic support from families, teachers, and new friends created an uplifting atmosphere that inspired every player to do their best. As students cheered one another on, the tournament became a memorable experience that they will never forget. This year’s event highlighted the unifying power of sports to bring people together and create lasting memories.
