The Thunder Bolt

How Thea Ngo is Writing Her Own Story

For many High School students, the path to success feels like a narrow corridor: get into a top-ranked university, land a job at a prestigious firm, and climb a pre-determined ladder. But for Concordia International School Hanoi alumna Thea Ngo (’19), the journey has been less about following a script and more about the courage to edit it in real time. Since graduating, Thea has moved across three continents, transitioned from global consulting to venture capital, and built a digital brand that reaches hundreds of thousands of people every month.

Following her time at Concordia, Thea moved to the United States to attend the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). Graduating in 2023 with a degree in Finance, she was a classic high-achiever, even joining a competitive consulting club on campus. However, Thea reflects on her time in Hanoi as the period where she developed her most important asset: cultural empathy.

While she was accustomed to the diverse environment of Concordia, moving to a massive, competitive East Coast university was still a culture shock. "The international exposure at Concordia is a superpower," she explains. Because she had learned how to understand different perspectives early on, she was able to navigate the intense social and professional hierarchies of an Ivy League school with much more ease, treating the transition as a learning opportunity rather than an obstacle.

After college, Thea landed a coveted role at PwC Strategy, advising private equity clients on major asset acquisitions. It was a high-stakes environment where she learned to think with massive scale and logic. Yet, in early 2024, she made a choice that many would find terrifying: she moved to Melbourne, Australia, without a job offer.

This move forced her to practice the resilience she first learned as an international student. She decided to pivot away from the massive framework of global consulting and toward the fast-paced world of Venture Capital (VC) and startups. "In consulting, you have a legacy brand behind you," she notes. "In the startup world, you have to build your own momentum and prove your value every single day."

Thea realized that in a modern job market, a traditional resume is often just a static piece of paper. To break into the Australian tech scene, she developed what she calls "Proof of Work," which is a living portfolio that showed she could provide value before she was even hired.

She launched "Founders in Motion," a video podcast where she interviews top early-stage founders. This was not just a hobby; it was a strategic move that allowed her to learn directly from industry leaders while building an audience. The project has since amassed over 150,000 views. Combined with her LinkedIn presence, which now reaches up to 300,000 people monthly, Thea used these digital platforms to stand out. Instead of just clicking "apply," she sent personalized emails and video cover letters, eventually landing her current role as an investor at a Melbourne venture capital firm.

Thea’s advice for current Concordia students is refreshingly centered. She emphasizes that while grades and rankings feel like everything right now, they are only one piece of a much larger puzzle. "Have more fun," she says simply. "Spend more time with your family while you’re still at home and don't stress too much about college rankings." She credits Concordia with giving her the resilient heart needed to move to a new country and start from scratch. Whether it was navigating UPenn or the competitive job market in Australia, the foundation was laid in her ability to handle challenges and build relationships.

Today, Thea is focused on doing multiple things simultaneously: working as an investor, creating content, and acting as a strategist. She believes this multitasking actually expands how she thinks and opens doors that did not exist before. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder to the Concordia community that a career is not a straight line; it is an evolution.

As she continues to make waves in the Melbourne startup scene, Thea Ngo represents the true potential of a Concordia education. Her journey proves that a career is not a final destination to be reached, but a series of bold transitions. By combining a global mindset with a resilient spirit, she has mastered the courage to pivot, ensuring that her direction is always defined by her own vision rather than a pre-written script.
