The Thunder Bolt
At Concordia, we believe that great teaching isn’t accidental, it is engineered. While our students' school day concludes at 11:00 AM on half-days, our faculty remains on campus until 3:00 PM to engage in deep professional work. These dedicated afternoon sessions, led by our Director of Learning and Teaching, have followed a meticulous "Roadmap of Alignment" to ensure our educational standards remain at the highest level.

By dedicating this time to our faculty, we ensure that every assessment and lesson plan is purposeful, fair, and designed for student success. Here is a look at the journey our teachers have taken so far this year:
August: Setting the Foundation
Focus: Developing Aligned Assessments
We kicked off the year by ensuring our "finish lines" were in the right place. Our teaching staff dived deep into the SBL (Standard-Based Learning) Continuum, examining the critical links between curriculum, instruction, assessment, and grading reporting. By refining our curriculum scope and sequence and identifying our "power standards," we ensured that every lesson has a clear purpose. Teachers worked on true alignment, meaning that what we test in the classroom matches these essential learning goals. This high level of intentionality ensures that when your child takes a test or completes a project, they are being evaluated with total clarity on exactly what they were taught.
October: Choosing the Right Tools
Focus: Aligning Assessment Methods and Standard Types
In October, our faculty shifted focus to the "how" of evaluation. Teachers worked to match our curriculum goals with the right kind of evaluation, ensuring that the 'how' we test always fits the 'what' we are teaching. By analyzing the characteristics and purpose of various assessment methods, the team was able to strategically determine the best methods for our "power standards." Whether it’s a presentation, a lab report, or a creative essay, the goal was to master the keys to quality assessment. This ensures the method of testing truly reflects the specific skill being learned, providing a more authentic and accurate picture of student growth.

November: Digital Precision
Focus: Aligning Curriculum and Assessments
To keep our curriculum organized and transparent, we utilize Atlas, a powerful digital mapping system. During this session, our faculty focused on a vital question: How can I ensure my assessment evidence aligns with the unit’s desired results? Teachers worked together to align the first two stages of their lesson planning: deciding on the final goals for the students and choosing the best way to measure their success. By clarifying exactly what success looks like, we’ve created a "big picture" view of the curriculum. This allows our Director of Teaching and Learning to track the entire student journey from Grade 1 through Grade 12, ensuring there are no gaps in your child’s education and that every assessment is a meaningful step toward a larger goal.
February: The Personal Touch
Focus: Aligned Assessments and Differentiation
Our most recent session took our foundational work and made it personal. Once a solid, aligned assessment is in place, the next challenge is: How can I differentiate assessment practices to support all learners while maintaining standard alignment? Supported by our Learning Support Coordinator and EAL Coordinator, teachers explored the core philosophy that differentiation provides opportunities for all students to show their learning, regardless of their starting point. Our teachers spent the session practicing how to adapt their tests for a single core learning goal. By providing every student with a fair way to show what they know, we ensure that each assessment remains a true and accurate reflection of their individual growth.

Why This Matters to You
When teachers have the time to align their work, students feel the difference. They experience:
- Clarity: They know exactly what is expected of them.
- Fairness: Assessments are directly tied to what happened in class.
- Support: Lessons are adjusted to fit their unique learning style.
We are proud of our teachers for their dedication to this rigorous process because it is exactly what allows our students to perform at such a high level. By continuously improving our instructional techniques, we ensure that every student can learn in the best way possible. It is this culture of intentionality and high standards that empowers our entire school community to thrive. These half-days are an investment in the quality of education that defines the Concordia Hanoi experience.
