How Cognitive Coaching is Empowering Our Middle School

At Concordia International School Hanoi, we're always looking for ways to enhance the learning experience for your children and support our incredible educators. That's why we're thrilled to share some exciting news about how our Middle School Language Arts and EAL Teacher is applying what he learned at an exciting professional development training in his classroom and throughout the Middle School. Owen Macfarlane immersed himself in a specialized course on Cognitive Coaching strategies for educators, hosted at International School Kuala Lumpur.

So, what exactly is Cognitive Coaching?

Think of it as a powerful framework that helps individuals move from an existing way of thinking to a more desired, often more effective, way of thinking. It's not about giving advice or telling someone what to do; it's about asking insightful questions that help the individual explore their own thoughts, identify solutions, and ultimately make their own cognitive shifts. It's about empowering independent thinking and problem-solving, which, as you know, are critical skills in today's world.

During the training, Owen dove deep into the planning and reflecting framework conversations. He explored how these conversations aren't just isolated events, but rather interconnected processes that can lead to significant growth. He practiced how to facilitate these discussions, ensuring they flow naturally and lead to meaningful insights.

A huge part of Cognitive Coaching is mastering the art of questioning strategies. Owen spent a lot of time learning how to craft questions that aren't just informational, but truly invite cognitive shifts. These are the kinds of questions that make you pause, consider different perspectives, and perhaps even challenge your own assumptions. He also honed his ability to read body language, identifying those subtle cues that indicate when a shift in thinking is actually occurring.

He also focused on developing a stronger awareness of different states of mind. We all experience various states; sometimes we're focused and engaged, other times we might be feeling overwhelmed or stuck. Recognizing these states in others is the first step towards helping them navigate their own thinking effectively. In the Kuala Lumpur training, Owen learned a specific framework of questioning for problem-resolving conversations. This framework is designed to intentionally guide an individual from their current, perhaps less-than-ideal, state to a clearly identified desired state. Imagine the power of this in helping a student work through a challenging academic task or a social situation!

Beyond the learning, Owen had a fantastic time connecting with colleagues from a number of great schools across Asia. These opportunities for collaboration and shared learning are invaluable, and we're so proud to be part of a wider community of educators dedicated to excellence.

Bringing Cognitive Coaching to the Middle School Classroom

Owen is incredibly excited to implement these strategies in his Language Arts and EAL (English as an Additional Language) classes, and we believe they will have a profoundly positive impact. Here are just a few examples of how Cognitive Coaching can be used in a Middle School setting:

Improving Writing Skills

Imagine a student struggling to organize their ideas for an essay. Instead of Owen simply telling them to create an outline, he might use Cognitive Coaching questions like:

"What do you envision your reader understanding after reading this paragraph?"

"When you think about the main point you want to make, what are some of the supporting details that come to mind?"

"If you were to approach this from a different angle, what might that look like?"

These questions empower the student to develop their own organizational strategy, fostering a deeper understanding of the writing process.

Enhancing Reading Comprehension

When a student is having difficulty grasping a complex text, Owen can use coaching to guide their thinking:

"What stood out to you most in this paragraph?"

"What connections can you make between this section and something else you've read or experienced?"

"If the author wanted you to feel a certain way here, what literary devices might they be using?"

This encourages active reading and critical thinking, moving beyond surface-level understanding.

Developing EAL Proficiency

For our EAL students, Cognitive Coaching can be particularly transformative. It can help them navigate language barriers and build confidence:

"When you're trying to express this idea in English, what are some of the words or phrases that come to mind first?"

"If you were to rephrase this sentence to make it clearer, what changes might you make?"

"What strategies do you find most helpful when encountering new vocabulary?"

By coaching them through these linguistic challenges, Owen helps them develop their own learning strategies and become more independent language learners.

Fostering Self-Reflection and Goal Setting

Beyond specific academic tasks, Cognitive Coaching can be used to help students reflect on their learning journey and set meaningful goals.

"What was a moment in class today where you felt particularly successful, and what contributed to that success?"

"Looking ahead to next week, what is one area you'd like to focus on improving in your Language Arts class?"

"What resources or support do you think would help you achieve that goal?"

This cultivates metacognition (the ability to think about one's own thinking) a crucial skill for lifelong learning.

A School-Wide Commitment to Growth

Owen's training is not an isolated event; it's part of a broader commitment here at our school. Many teachers, and indeed all members of our leadership team, have either undergone or will undergo Cognitive Coaching training. This comprehensive approach ensures that many members of our faculty body are equipped with a shared framework for supporting growth and development.

This framework equips our leaders to better support one another, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment. It empowers us to guide our students more effectively, helping them not just learn content, but also develop the critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-awareness skills they need to thrive. And perhaps most importantly in today's rapidly changing world, it allows us to adapt to individual needs in a complex and evolving educational landscape.

We are incredibly excited about the positive ripple effects Owen's training, and the ongoing integration of Cognitive Coaching, will have on our students, our staff, and our entire school community. We believe this approach will empower your children to become more confident, independent, and resilient learners, ready to tackle any challenge that comes their way.

Here's to a year of powerful questions, insightful reflections, and incredible growth!
