Creating a supportive environment for new High School students is crucial for their successful transition into a new educational setting. Dr. Cecilia Erasmus, one of our dedicated High School Counselors, has initiated a program designed to help these students feel welcomed and integrated into the Concordia Hanoi school community. This initiative, which pairs new students with existing peers, aims to provide individualized support and guidance during this pivotal transition time.
“Having transitioned from South Africa to Vietnam last year, I personally experienced the profound challenges that come with change. Our mission with the Peer Support Project is to ensure that new students feel genuinely welcomed in our community. We aim to create an environment where they can find comfort in a friendly smile or the caring support of new friends. Together, we are building a community that embraces every individual, helping them navigate their own transitions with confidence and compassion. A six-week program called the I-Grow program was successfully implemented at my previous school, and this created the inspiration for this new initiative.” - Dr. Cecilia Erasmus
This program targeted 23 students from various schools and countries who entered grades 9, 10, and 11 at the start of the new school year in August 2024. Recognizing the challenges faced by students transitioning into High School or into a new school, Dr. Erasmus developed a Peer Support group that facilitated connections between newcomers and established students. This mentorship model ensured that new students received personalized assistance to navigate their new environment, including understanding school activities, locating classrooms, and meeting teachers.
"Our intention with this program is to further build our community. A few years ago, as a freshman entering High School, I felt a sense of community but found it challenging to connect. The whole goal of this initiative is to help everyone connect and assimilate." - Jen (G12)
The Peer Support Program is part of the High School Counseling Department’s support for all transitioning students. To kick off the program, an informative session titled "High School 101" was held for incoming Concordia Grade 8 students and their parents at the end of the previous school year (May 2024). This session aimed to familiarize families with high school life and expectations. Parents were invited to a lunch presentation where they learned about the school’s culture, resources, and support systems available for their children.
During the orientation, students were divided into four groups, allowing for smaller, more interactive discussions. A panel of Grade 9 students addressed common questions and concerns, providing insights from their own experiences. This peer-led approach not only reassured new students, but also fostered a sense of belonging.
"When I embarked on this project, my goal was to help the freshmen who are experiencing what I went through. I wanted them to have trusted individuals to turn to because during my freshman year, when I faced a crisis, I had no one to ask for help. Through this program, I aim to foster a strong sense of community to ensure we can support and stay connected to each other.” - Kate (G11)
The Peer Support Program emphasizes the continuous support students require throughout the school year. Initially, new students had individual sessions with their mentors to ensure they felt grounded and could thrive academically and socially. All counselors involved were also committed to providing mental health support alongside academic guidance, recognizing that emotional well-being is crucial during times of transition. Ongoing support was given for six weeks, and many of the peer mentees (the new students) valued the assistance provided; some even became good friends with their peer mentors.
Feedback from students who participated in a similar program last year highlighted the positive impact of having someone guide them through their transition, with many expressing a desire to give back by helping new students this year. This innovative program not only addresses the immediate needs of new students but also fosters long-term connections within the school community. By pairing newcomers with mentors, a nurturing environment was created that encouraged students to find their roots and grow. As they embark on this new journey, the support received from their peers and the school will be instrumental in ensuring their success and well-being.
