Concordia Students Produce Mobile App

Concordia students, Jiwon (Gx), Ema and Duc, are designing and developing a mobile app to provide information about events at Concordia and shows AQI, as part of the Coding Club project.

The current prototype works, and already includes a number of features.

“Showing AQI is one of the functions of the app. The app collects weather data (average temperature and AQI) of the day from a website, using weather API, and shows it to the user, Jiwon explained.

“We plan to add more functions to the app such as a news page, sending notifications, and the schedule for the week. I hope we can finish the development this year so that all Concordia students can use it,” he added.

Jiwon and his friends involved in the Coding Club project hope the app will help keep the Concordia community updated on events and activities.

“This app would provide special schedules and events making the news and other information more accessible,” said Jiwon. “We will add a function that sends a notification to students - if there is some important news that students must know, this app will send notifications to all students.”

The Coding Club developed the app under the supervision and support of high school math and science teacher Dr. Santos.

“This is a major thing - this is a concrete example that the students can create things, and not only create things that will be thrown away after one year, they can be used by the school,” said Dr. Santos, adding, “This development is at its beginning stages and new students will have the opportunity to be part of this important school project. There is always room for new ideas."

Built using the coding language called Flutter, Jiwon said he’s learned a great deal from the project. “I have learned a new programming language, working on this project. Also, there were many trials and errors. I learned that these trials and errors are necessary for success.”
