Concordia Reception Students Bring Past to Life by Learning Old Time

Concordia Reception students are working on their second social studies unit 'Then and Now.'

“We are finding out about different elements of life in the past and exploring how it was different from life today.” said Concordia Reception teacher Mrs. Turner-Williams.

Students learned about how children in the past entertained themselves, and what they did for fun. They learned that students had to use their imaginations and the things around them to create their own games and toys. When asked if they thought it sounded fun to be a child in the past, some of them said, “no!”

The Reception classes decided to find out for sure by playing some traditional games from the past that required no technology. They played duck-duck-goose, hopscotch, and pin the tail on the donkey. The students had a blast!

Afterwards, the classes reflected on the games and shared their new opinions to the questions: Did you enjoy the games from the past?  Why or why not?  Which one was easy and which game was your favorite and why?

“I liked duck-duck goose because it is so fun.  You get to chase! I would not like to be a kid in the past because I wouldn’t want to do the hunting.” said David.

“All! Because they’re fun!” said Jaehyeon.

Kensei pointed to the donkey as his favorite game.

“I liked duck-duck goose because it was fun.  I don’t want to live in the past because it is dirty,” said My Ky.

“Duck-duck goose because it is running!” said Yui.

“I liked the duck-duck goose and pin the tail because you close your eyes.  I’ve played this before!  I think I would like to be a kid in the past a little bit because there are lots of fun games,” said Aya.

“I liked pin-the-tail and hopscotch and duck-duck goose because they were fun.  I don’t want to be in the past because I would need to build a house with trees,” said Minh.

“I loved the duck-duck goose because it is fun. I like the past because the game was so fun,” said Sophie.

“I liked everything because it was fun.  I don’t want to be in the past because we need to make food and clothing,” said Noah.

“I like duck-duck goose and tail on the donkey and hopscotch because they were very funny. I like the past because it is funny,” said Min Jun.
