The Thunder Bolt
Concordia high school students built creative displays to represent all 36 chemical elements.

Working in groups of three, the students’ models needed to include legends and features that corresponded to each element’s chemical properties.

All of the displays were excellent. They ranged from a bakery - where the sprinkles on pastries corresponded to chemical properties, to a town diorama, a periodic playlist, a periodic car dealership, a periodic menu, and a mock social media-style student list.

The Bolt spoke with some of the students about the experience:
"Throughout our learning of the periodic table and the elements, we specifically focused on how elements relate to each other and their trends in the periodic table. Although the process required a lot of time and effort, we were able to create a wonderful new display of our own!" Olivia (G10)

“We decided to make our periodic table model into a town. This was because, in a town, there’s so much variety with different buildings and different neighborhoods, just like the periodic table. We thought by building a town with each neighborhood representing a group and each building representing an element, we would be able to express so many fun characteristics of a periodic table as well as chemistry itself. Hence, the project gave us a chance to explore deeper into each element and employ various concepts we learned in chemistry. Overall, we really enjoyed building this project!!” Suji (G10)

“The purpose of our project was to demonstrate our understanding of the periodic table. We incorporated into our project the characteristics of each element and different trends in their arrangement. It took a lot of time and effort to draw and color everything, but we had fun throughout the process and it definitely helped our understanding of the unit.” Seo Eun (G10)
