Alumni Spotlight: Isabela Hurley ’24

Minor: Global Health
For Isabela Hurley, nursing represents the perfect intersection of her greatest interests. She is deeply passionate about the high-level science of the field, specifically learning how the human body functions, how it responds to disease, and the complex ways medications are used for treatment. However, she believes the technical side is only half the battle; she is equally driven by the opportunity to be a trusting face for her patients, acting as a dedicated advocate who cares for them in their most vulnerable moments. She views the field as an incredibly rewarding way to serve those who need it most.
Isabela feels that the academic environment at Concordia was instrumental in preparing her for the rigors of the University of Pennsylvania. She found that the classes and professors were the strongest assets in her preparation, noting that AP Biology and AP Chemistry initially sparked her interest in the medical world. It was a junior-year Anatomy and Physiology course, however, that served as the turning point when she realized medicine was her definitive calling. She specifically credits the enthusiasm of teachers like Mr. O, whose passion for his subject made the world of medicine feel both accessible and exciting.
The reality of her chosen path became even clearer last semester as Isabela began her clinical rotations. While working in the NICU, she found profound meaning in the quiet, critical moments of care, such as holding the infants and witnessing the dedication nurses show to both the babies and their families. This experience reinforced her desire to be a steady presence in times of critical need. Looking toward the future, Isabela plans to graduate in 2028 and work as a NICU or pediatric nurse for several years, perhaps even as a travel nurse, before eventually becoming a Nurse Practitioner or specializing in Global Health.
Reflecting on her journey, Isabela encourages current students to dive into the opportunities now available at Concordia. She advises students to take classes that genuinely interest them and to never be afraid to ask questions of their teachers, who are often eager to share their own stories. She believes that being proactive by reaching out to professionals, starting a club, or finding places to volunteer is the most effective way to grow a genuine passion for the medical field.
