Admissions FAQs

A student receiving wait pool status has met all qualifications for admission to Concordia but a seat is not available in the grade to which the student has applied. Students receiving wait pool status are immediately notified when an opening becomes available.

Concordia emphasizes providing an educational experience that is aligned with children's physical, emotional, and mental development. It is normal for students to be slightly advanced or behind their peers as they complete their journey through childhood. For our youngest learners, the child's chronological age is the most important consideration when deciding grade level.
Regardless of the number of years of previous schooling experience...

• Children who turn 4 years old on or before September 1st should apply to Concordia's play-based preschool program
• Children who turn 5 years old on or before September 1st should apply to our balanced play and academic Reception program
• Children who turn 6 years old on or before September 1st should apply to our Grade 1 program.

Beginning in grade 2, the child's previous schooling experience becomes the most important consideration when deciding grade level.  Students applying for Concordia's grade 2 program, should have completed an entire year (two full semesters) of Grade 1 education.
However, many students seek to enroll from various educational systems throughout the world whose school calendars may not be the same as Concordia's calendar.  Concordia offers the American curriculum. The school year begins in August and ends in June.  We encourage students who have completed the full year of the last grade before August to apply for consideration to the next grade level.  For example, a grade 3 student in Australia will have just completed their grade 3 year in December.  The student should apply for grade 3 consideration at Concordia to start studies in January.

Most Concordia teachers are from the United States. We also hire teachers from Canada, Australia and other parts of the world. All our classroom teachers are native English speakers.

Concordia’s school year typically starts in mid-August and ends in mid-June.

Preschool 4 through high school students study from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Concordia offers an EAL program. Development of reading and writing proficiency for academic success, as well as oral and listening communication skills, form the basis of instruction within our EAL classes. All admission of students entering our EAL program will include a review cycle, where continuing at Concordia will be based on progress in English. We have limited spaces in our EAL program.

Concordia can provide limited support services for some students who have mild learning needs. The Learning Support Department strives to ensure that all students will find personal and academic success to reach their potential in their mainstream classroom. 

Concordia does not offer formal services for students with special learning needs or specific learning disabilities (i.e. significant limited intellectual ability, severe physical handicaps or pronounced social, emotional or behavioral difficulties).

Admission to Concordia is contingent upon a match between the student’s needs and the level of service available.

A combination of teaching models may include short-term small groups of students for in-class or out of class instruction, as well as co-teaching.

Assessments by certified professionals may be required as a part of the admissions process when the student has been formally diagnosed. Upon admission, students may need a Concordia Support Plan (CSP), Concordia Accommodation Plan (CAP), or therapies offered by third party professionals who provide Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech & Language Pathology (SLP) sessions.

All candidates seeking admission to Concordia are assessed for English and ability in four areas: mathematics, reading, writing, and a formal interview. Please note, students seeking admission to Preschool 4, Reception and Grade 1 have individual language and ability assessments and the formal interview. Applicants seeking placement in grades 2-12 are administered the math and reading portions of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), provide a writing sample and the formal interview. The entrance exams support the Admissions Committee in determining the match between a particular student’s needs and potential and Concordia’s resources and capabilities. Students whose native language is not English will also take a language assessment. The assessment procedure is used to determine student placement and if any additional services are required to support the student’s success.

Yes. Students are administered standardized testing annually throughout the upper elementary grades, middle school, and high school.

Student busing is available from most areas of Hanoi. One-way pick up or drop off is also available. The bus fee includes transportation for students participating in After School Activities. For all transportation questions, please contact Mr. Vu.

Technology Literacy, the ability to know how and when to use which technology to meet a need, is essential for success in modern society. Technology Literacy, in turn, is foundational for Information Literacy, which is knowing when and why you need information, where to find it, and how to evaluate, use, and communicate it in an ethical manner.

Technology & Information Literacy at Concordia is not a class, but a continuum of skills and training, integrated across the entire curriculum and developed through close collaboration among tech staff, teachers, and library and curriculum development staff.

A hot lunch program is offered daily for all students for a fee. Additionally, microwaves are available for students who choose to bring a lunch from home.

Concordia values language learning. In Reception, students enjoy language learning through learning phrases of the languages of their classmates. Beginning in grade 1, our EAL specialists meet the needs of students for whom English is an additional language.  For students who are native English speakers and for those who do not require the services of our EAL program, Vietnamese is offered for foreign language learners and Heritage Vietnamese is offered for native speakers. 

Students in grade 5 explore both Mandarin and Spanish throughout the year in preparation for choosing either Mandarin or Spanish in middle school and high school. Concordia offers Advanced Placement Mandarin and Advanced Placement Spanish starting in grade 10.

All Concordia students are required to wear a Concordia uniform, which consists of a uniform top purchased from the school. Students in grade 4 to grade 12 are required to purchase a PE uniform. Please find our uniform policy.
