AP Focus - Statistics

Students in Concordia’s Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics class are learning how to do research, how to make sense of data and describe it, and how to make correlations.

“AP Statistics helps me view the world more skeptically,” said Chris (G12), “I feel I have control over the information given to me and I understand how to analyze it.”

Students in Concordia’s AP Statistics class do surveys and design experiments to set reliable parameters and interpret the results, and learn how to interpret whether results are statistically significant.

Students also learn how statistics can be used for false purposes - and how they can be a savvy consumers.

AP Statistics is one of three tool sets that go into University-level Big Data (the others being Math and Computer Science).

Concordia’s grades 1-5 students participated in a worldwide mathematics competition that lasted over the course of several days.  Students competed with other kids from all over the world to gain points for solving math questions based on their corresponding grade levels.

Nineteen Concordia students received Platinum Awards for scoring over 10,000 points in the competition and five individual Concordia students took top world rankings!

A very special mention to our grades 2 and 3 classes that ranked #6 IN THE WORLD in this global competition.

Concordia Academics- Test Scores

Concordia prides ourselves on elite academics.  The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) and the SAT and PSAT results, are strong indicators which chart our academic success.

The MAP test is taken by most international schools in the world, as well as some Vietnamese schools.  As the name indicates, it is used to measure a school’s overall academic progress.

As these comparative tables show, Concordia consistently tests far above the Hanoi average in the MAP.

MAP results also help us identify specific areas, class by class and student by student, where we are excelling and areas in which we can improve, making it an excellent curriculum tool for shaping Concordia’s overall learning strategies.

Concordia students who have taken the SAT exam have scored exceptionally well compared to global averages.

AP Calculus

AP Calculus AB students are studying differential equations which model exponential growth and logistical growth, a university-level look at how to achieve maximums and minimums. In next semester’s AP Calculus BC class, students will create polynomials of infinite length and represent sine, cosine and tangent.

Calculus BC is a 2nd term university-level course and a gateway to upper level physics.

“My friend is in her 1st year of university in Canada, and when I talk to her, I realize we are doing the same course. So what we’re learning now will put us ahead of our classmates in university.” - Linh, Grade 12

Math - Slope

Middle school math students are redesigning the stairs in an effort to demonstrate an understanding of slope and how to calculate it.

Concordia’s middle school curriculum pushes students to see real-life applications to the subjects and material they’re learning - making sure they “know” and understand the material, moving past memory to understanding relationships.

“We learned how to calculate ‘rise and run’ and how to work together to use time effectively. “ -Jonathan, Grade 8

“Our test was to calculate the height and width. We had to learn how to do a redesign taking out two of the old stairs but still reaching the same height.” - Kien, Grade 8

Math Competition

Concordia’s high school math department held an internal math competition to practice problem solving - an initiative from math teacher Neil Whitehead to get students ready for what they’ll see in math at the next level.  Students who recently took the SAT found the math competition helpful.  The internal math competition focuses on creative process of thinking, and is preparing students for the Canadian Math Competition, in which they will compete later in the year, as well as for the SAT.

“On the SAT there was one problem about standard deviation, and another about sampling and I was like ‘Mr. Whitehead just taught us that’. “

-Angie, Grade 11

“I found the SAT easier than last year because we’ve been training with harder problems. If we practice enough we’re going to nail the math section. I feel I did better than last year.” -Trang, Grade 11
