Why Do Picture Books Matter?

From the Concordia Library:

Why should you join Concordia Library?

Why do picture books matter? And why do children love and need these books so much?

Picture books are so important and they can make a difference in our  children’s lives.  As we know, children read pictures before they read the words. The illustrations work alongside the words and meaning is found in the illustrations as they begin to learn to read.  Wonderful stories are told in a visual language, and the setting and other factors are clear to the young reader. Visual reading, for a student who is learning a new language has strong benefits , and the student gains a wealth of understanding in his new language.

Children discover art for the first time in picture books, and from this develops a love of illustration and a beginning understanding of art.  Lois Ehlert illustrates her books with art supplies from nature, and sees picture books as  physical objects.

There are many wonderful picture book authors , who bring a large diversity to their stories.  Picture books authors, such as Eric Carle, reach out to their young audience through life lessons, and we can learn about the importance of friendship and the joy of being kind to all we meet. Bill Martin JR  and Julia Donaldson and many other authors bring the value of rhythm into the words of a picture book, and emphasize the value of repetition and rhythm.

Kevin Henkes focuses on a child’s first experiences, friendship, school, sisters and brothers. Readers can empathize  and understand the feelings and can feel braver after reading his books.  Maurice Sendak in “Where the wild things are” brought  new characters into picture books, characters who have all the emotions and feelings we have.  He is telling readers, ”You kids are heroes. You’ll make out.”

The library welcomes you to check out picture books for your children.
