Middle School Focus - Chemistry

Grade 6 students are learning about pH balances in water by testing red cabbage juice using various household items.

Red cabbage contains a chemical called anthocyanin, which changes color dependent upon the acidity of its environment.

In an acidic environment, the cabbage turns reddish-pink, in a neutral environment it is purple, and in a base or alkaline environment it turns bluish-green or yellow.

The tests are part of the Save Our Ocean project, as students learn how acidity affects our oceans.
